DAVID CARMICHAEL – ARTIST STATEMENT

 

 

From the first moment that I touched chisel to stone I experienced an instantaneous and profound connection that deepens with every work.  It has been the discovery of a true love and calling.  It is a spiritual awakening that illuminates my life.  Each work is journey of discovery of the forms and energies inherit in the stone as well as my artistic vision.  I love the resistance of the stone.  I strive through form, line, volume and space to conjure emotion and the ineffable mysteries of life that lie beneath the surface of our perception.  I very much enjoy the “thing-ness” of sculpture.  I work the stone to give shape to my experience while the stone, in turn, inspires and guides my hand and eye infusing my spirit with its beauty and power.
